Along the route, you can also visit historical points of interest such as the Sholl Tomb, the Ruins of the Swift Meatpacking Plant, and La Mina Beach.
WHAT TO SEE
SHOLL'S GRAVE
Lieutenant Robert Sholl, who died on board the Beagle on January 28, 1828, is buried there. Part of the original tombstone is preserved and on public display at the Pioneer Museum.
FRIGORIFICO SWIFT.
SWIFT MEATPACKING PLANT
The Swift meatpacking plant was the main economic engine of Puerto San Julián. It operated from 1912 to 1967.
More than five million sheep were slaughtered in that period. Today only its skeletal and silent ruins remain.
TUGBOAT SWIFT 12
Run aground next to the ruins of the meatpacking plant, the tugboat "Swift 12" reminds us of the port and livestock past of Puerto San Julián.
This small vessel was a vital cog in the operation of the meatpacking plant, facilitating the transport of personnel, towing barges and providing support in maintenance tasks.
LAS BOMBAS.
Las Bombas Campsite is located in an exceptional setting, next to the coastal circuit of our town.
It is surrounded by littoral ridges, which are undulations of stones formed by the accumulation of sediments due to fluctuations in sea level over time.
PUNTA CUEVAS.
Often confused with Cabo Curioso, Punta Cuevas is located 18 km from San Julián and is an important site of marine fossils embedded in 65-million-year-old cliffs. Gastropods, oysters, and silica bands are some of the wonders that can be discovered here.
Its beaches are a popular destination for the inhabitants of San Julián in summer.
PLAYA MEDANOS.
Popularly known as Los Arenales, Medanos beach is a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by cliffs, ideal for sport fishing.
PLAYA PIGAFETA.
This beach is known as Segundo Cabo, with similar characteristics to Punta Cuevas, ideal for a glimpse into geological history.
The cliffs reveal millions of years, while the low tide uncovers marine fossils and fallen rocks, witnesses of a distant past.
MIRADOR PANORAMICO.
Named for the coal mining that took place after World War II, this mine was only active for three years, until the material declined in quality and quantity.
At this site, you can observe marine fossil remains, the "sand dollar" being the most abundant, in addition to thin coal seams at the foot of the cliff and glauconite bands towards the top.
PLAYA GRANDE.
Chosen by fishermen of all levels, different fishing tournaments are held there, and it also serves as a suitable place for recreation, since it is a wide beach, without large marine depressions, it is 29 km from the city.
VIA LUCIS.
The Via Lucis or "Way of Light" is a theme park located a few kilometers from the coastal circuit of Puerto San Julián. It is a path of bas-reliefs decorated with marine elements, ideal for mini-trekking, reflection, and spirituality.
The route culminates at a panoramic point that offers unparalleled views of the city and its beaches.
